Going it alone with studying the guitar is rewarding, saves you the money you’d otherwise spend on a teacher and doesn’t tie you down to a timescale set by someone else. As long as you can remain concentrated that is. We don’t all have the self discipline to follow a self study course all the way through and may even be better off going to a teacher who sees our progression each week and keeps us on track. I sure enough feel it tough enough and so I’ve come up with three sure fire ways to keep up that momentum and stay driven. They work well for me and if you need to learn to play guitar and keep some money in your pocket then read on: 1. Present yourself timescales and deadlines to work to. For example order yourself that you intend to be able to play that song all the way through, or the main verse, or the chorus, or that solo by the end of the week. Don’t beat yourself up if you can’t fulfill the deadline but still give yourself a reason to exercise a particular amount every day until this goal is met – then move onto another. 2. Practice your musical scales, arpeggios, chord progressions and exercises first then play the song you’re on afterward followed by some messing about. It can get dull practicing those all fundamental exercises and very tempting to just skip them and go onto the fun part. Treat them like the green veggies you never wanted to eat up as a kid but had to if you wanted some of that nice sweet later on. 3. Follow your guitar heroes on video sites like Youtube, get day by day inspiration and also observe the song you’re exercising on being played. It can get isolated and demoralizing when you’re evolving your skills so watch your guitar idols and remember that they were where you are now and got to where they are by continuing on. These 3 methods are what keep me focused and building up my guitar skills when I could quite easily just stop exercising those tedious musical scales and go and do something more fun. A programme and some direction will get you through the tough times and see you playing like a pro possibly even faster than if you had paid out for a teacher. Keep your eye on the prize, set true to life goals, stay inspired and you will get there.

Beginners and guitar! Hmm, not exactly the best combination, are they? The reason I said that is because, I too was a beginner at a point of time and I too did the same mistakes that most beginners do despite having read through a thousand pages of beginner’s guides and literature. Now, about 4 years later, here I am preaching to the choir. But I simply cannot help it. If you are smart, you will get the gist of things by the end of this article. If not, then I will see you four years down the line saying the same lines that I said up there. So are you all set to proceed further? Beginners are a very impatient species. From the first day onwards, they seem to want everything faster than the average Joe on the streets. The moment I held a guitar for the first time, I was expecting to beat my instructor. After a month, I hoped to beat the Eagles (Whew!). If you are going on the same lines, then stop. Here are five pointers that should help you enormously in your learning process as a beginner.

Slow and steady wins the race. The person who said that was a lot smarter than most of us. The first lesson for beginners looking to learn the guitar is ‘be patient’. No one has learnt to play the guitar in 3 minutes or 60 minutes or one day for that matter. So if you are still investing your money in books that promise to teach you to play the guitar in minutes, then it’s a total wastage of your investments. The guitar is a musical instrument that requires a lot of skill and patience to master. So, set a realistic time frame to learn the basics and a lifetime to master it. Hold the guitar properly. You only learn it once and you will probably find that you can never unlearn your first learning for years. So ensure that you get your basics right and hold the guitar properly. It should feel comfortable in your hands and you must be able to play both frets and strings with equal grace. Start off with finger exercises. I still remember how my instructor always used to tell me to warm up each time I wanted to play and I wished I could strangulate him (If my instructors reading this, then please forgive me). But over the years, it is this warm up routine that has helped me hone my skills. Finger exercises are a very important part of your learning curve. It might seem like the most tedious thing at first, but without it, you will be like a kid stuttering to recite a poem. Start by playing lead and then proceed to chords. Once you start playing chords, the impatient demon tends to take over and you want to play the most advanced chords in a few weeks. But chords are the core of any guitar lesson and you need to give it due time and effort. Go slow and take one chord at a time. Master it and then proceed to the next. Practice, my boy, practice. The last thing you want to do is play your guitar once every week. I remember that I used to practice for almost 8 hours a day while learning the instrument. It has gone down now. But I still tweak the strings at least once in a day. No amount of lessons or reading material is going to teach you what practice will.
Keep these five things in mind, follow them routinely until you have reached an advanced stage. (You can play a few songs) and then, stick to the last point in the five. Have fun!

The Review Minethereviewmine

When I am searching for a guitar there is a couple things I know to look for. Some are because of preference, others out of whats required for a guitar to be considered “Worth its Value”. Now, The first thing you need to know about all guitars is that YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. Unless you know for sure what your buying is legit, save save save your money. Buy the right guitar at the best price you can afford. Don’t cheap out and buy junk — you’ll wish you hadn’t. Its true many cheap guitars look nice and seem alright, but believe me, looks are deceiving! You know what they say, ‘beauty is only skin deep but ugly goes all the way through!’. Okay, If I want to buy a guitar that’s going to be used to its fullest potential then there are 4 basic things I look for: 1) Good Quality Wood – A guitar is no better than the wood its made out of. Some of the woods that I like to see in guitars are woods like koa, Ash, Mahogany (Very Expensive), Korina (Even More) and thats just a few to mention. You don’t want a guitar made from your backyard tree. All in all the wood should be aged, the older the better, and you should research what types of wood make different tones. 2) Decent Amplification – I love a guitar that sounds as good in the house (Amplified) as it does just by itself. This Site I found has a guy playing an acoustic with just about every pickup out there. You can learn what sounds good and go from there 3) Guitar Scent – wood glue is the devil. So many times I’ve seen people with very cheep guitars that have been assembled with wood glue and smell just like it. This is a tone robber and will make your guitar sound muddy. I know its virtually impossible to be able to smell a guitar online. But if you can go to a music store and checkout places like guitar center and take a look a couple guitars (that will most likely be over priced) and you will be able to tell the difference. I haven’t seen a taylor with this problem. I have seen many fender acoustics that have this. 4) A Great Feel – There is some great guitars out there. But, there even more guitars that are defiantly not what your looking for. When you pickup a great guitar, you just know its great. But why is that? The reason is because of the feel of the neck. The action, The neck roundness, the intonation, the frets. The only way your going to get a great guitar with these features. The name. The reason we buy the brand name is because we know what were getting. Taylor is a great trusted brand and if you want that “Great Feel” your going to have to go with a great brand. Of course, there are a lot more variables to consider, but these 4 things are essential clues that you have a great guitar in your hands. Most Taylors will have exactly what your looking for but its buyer beware when it comes to buying a new or used guitar online. Remember, the cheapest does not always equal the best deal, but you don’t have to take the first price you see. Are you looking for a great Taylor Guitar? The internet being what it is, finding the perfect taylor acoustic out there has been made both easier and harder at the same time. Easier because you’re not limited to your town or local resources for selection and/or knowledge. Harder because the shear size of the internet means that you will be bombarded with choices, some great and some complete misrepresentations (lies). How do you sift through the gold mine of options. . . Talk about a needle in a hay stack! Well, that’s why I put together this guide. Think of it as a map through the maze of information and “deals” out there. It will help you find the best taylor acoustic guitar possible at the time, and hopefully give you a head start on the hungry pack. Good luck! When is a Good Age to Start Learning Music?

The Kodaly Method is an approach to music education, developed in Hungary by the Hungarian composer and educator Zoltan Kodaly.

In order for a child to realize his or her full potential, it is necessary that he or she begin musical training at an early age. Kodály emphasized that children must learn to read music at the same time as they learn to read language. Kodály felt that children between ages three and seven are most sensitive to music, and therefore good musical instruction is crucial at this time if the musical ear is to be fully developed. Kodály recommended that musical training begin no later than in Kindergarten and the primary grades.

Also central to the Kodály Method is the philosophy that, as a child naturally learns his mother tongue before learning foreign languages, so should he learn his musical mother tongue, that is, the folk music of his native language, before learning foreign music. Kodály believed that the use of native folk music is most valuable in helping children develop basic music skills because of its familiarity to children through real-life musical experiences .

He felt that children are more sensitive to art than adults, and would therefore only reach their full potential through the use of the finest music. Kodály claimed that exposure to the inferior ‘educational music’ used in schools as a child would prevent one from being able to appreciate high-quality music as an adult.

A child’s brain goes through a process of developing and maturing, its weight almost tripling by the age of three. A baby’s brain is very fragile until it becomes covered with myelin, a substance that insulates the brain. When a baby has been profusely shaken, it can actually shake the brain around in the skull and damage areas of the brain (Shaken Baby syndrome). While synapses are continuing to develop during the first year, the brain builds the potential to learn. During the first three years, the brain is storing information and memories that will be the foundation for future learning. If this foundation is blemished, or stifled, it can affect the entire life span of the child.

Knowledge on the early development of the brain informs us that during the first few years of a child’s life, extreme nurture and care must be given for their future development. Exposing young children to musical sounds, lullabies and rhymes assists in this development. Hearing music is a sensory experience. Music has a soothing effect on an infant’s mood.

What To Do When Buying A Bass Guitar

The bass guitar is very much like a slightly larger version of an electric guitar, but it usually only has four strings and also has a longer neck and a slightly wider body. Anyone learning to play the bass (or planning to) needs to first understand the instrument’s place in a band – IE – what it’s main purpose is, and secondly to understand the different techniques employed for the different genres of music played by the band. Bass playing has some interesting techniques associated with it that also have unusual names. For example, ’slapping’ is achieved by (usually) striking the E string (normally the ‘bottom’ string – IE – the ‘widest’ one that plays the lowest notes but appears to be the ‘uppermost’ string when the guitar is strapped on and the strings are viewed) with the thumb towards the neck of the instrument. The thumb is then pulled away quickly. If you listen to any ‘funk’ music, you will hear this technique being employed quite a lot. Another of the bass techniques is called popping. This is done by slipping one of the fingers right underneath the string and then pulling it outwards and releasing it so that it pops back. Both of these techniques (slapping and popping) can be used effectively by alternating between one and the other. Obviously, this can be done a lot more quickly than repeatedly doing the one technique with either just the thumb or just the finger. The main backbone of a band is made up of the bass guitar working closely with the drummer. This section provides the rhythm, the main melody and the basic harmonic foundation for the rest of the band who play chords over the top of this foundation. Obviously, the bassist therefore needs to have particularly good timing. You will normally find more men than women playing the bass, not least because of how thick the strings are, therefore it needs a reasonable amount of finger strength and toughness to be able to play the instrument for very long periods of time without causing injury. It is more likely to be the case if it is a particularly aggressive, rapid style of bass playing required for that type of music. Also many larger built men find that their finger tip size, hand size and limb length make it much more comfortable and productive for them to choose the bass rather than the electric guitar. Specifically, a rhythm guitarist will quite often only play chords, which require hand dexterity and ideally, thin fingers. So for someone with big ’sausage’ fingers, who also might be a little more ‘clumsy’ than others, the bass is the best solution as they may find normal guitar playing quite frustrating. Bass guitars can be played using the index and middle finger in alternate ‘plucks’. The thumb is often rested on the top of the pick-up nearest the middle in order to support these two fingers while playing. But the bass can also be played with a pick (or plectrum). There is also a pick that is made specifically for the bass which is larger than a typical guitar pick. |Bass guitars are most usually played by using the middle finger plus the index finger to alternatively pluck the strings. The thumb is usually used as a support and is most commonly rested just on top of the pick-up. You can also play the bass guitar with a pick (otherwise known as a plectrum) and there are bass pics manufactured specifically for the bass guitar-these are thicker and more sturdy than the typical electric guitar pick. }If you are looking to buy a bass guitar on the internet, some good tips are to check that the sender will be using adequate packaging to protect the item in transit. Also, you should view pictures of the guitar closely if it is second-hand in order to try and find any marks or other giveaway signs that the instrument has been mis-treated or dropped, as any damage could affect the quality of the sound produced by it. As with any online purchase, particularly if it isn’t cheap, one should take great care to examine the credentials of the seller (if it’s on eBay) or website. Look into their selling history, check their refund policy and look for any other information that will help you to make a safe and satisfying purchase.

The electric guitar has long been used in many popular styles of music, including almost all genres of rock and roll, country music, jazz, blues, ambient and even contemporary classical music. It uses pickups to convert the vibration of its steel-cored strings into electrical current, which is then amplified.
The electric guitar can be played either solo or with other instruments. It has been used in numerous genres of popular music, as well as classical music.
Different types of electric guitars
There are various types of this popular instrument available in the market. While shopping for an electric guitar for one’s personal use, the decision should be carefully taken about which one will be the right choice and make. The types include:
Solid body
These guitars have holes for neither sound nor an internal cavity to accommodate vibration, such as those used to amplify string vibrations in acoustic guitars. They are generally made of hardwood with a lacquer coating and have 6 steel strings.
Hollow body
These guitars have a hollow body and electronic pickups mounted on its body. The hollow body vibrates and the pickups convert a combination of string and body vibration into an electrical signal.
Electric-acoustic
In these guitars the pickups do not produce a signal directly from the vibration of the strings, but rather from the vibration of the guitar top or body. So,these are also called acoustic guitars.
Seven-string
Seven string electric guitars were popularized in the 1980s.
Eight string
Eight string guitars are rare, but not unused.
Twelve string
Twelve string instruments feature six pairs of strings, usually with each pair tuned to the same note.
Apart from these there are few other types of these popular makes available in the market which are bought according to their requirement.
Selecting the right kind of electric guitar
The primary reason for buying a guitar will be playing it. But one would also look for something whose resale value will increase in time. Craftsmanship is an important element in the future value of this instrument.
Areas that require special skills, such as binding, finishing, hand shaping and inlaid work, are forever expensive and will enhance the value of guitars in the future.
Thus things to look for while buying an electric guitar will be
Good Tone Wood
Although the sound of a good guitar would seem to come entirely from the pickup, the type of wood has an important influence on tone and sustenance.
Noise free instrument
The pickups on guitars and basses should be shielded from extraneous electronic sources that can cause humming and buzzing. And they should be covered in wax or epoxy to prevent micro phonic feedback.
Checking out the Neck Joint
The neck joint should be tight and rigid so that none of the string vibration is transferred to the neck.
Testing the sustenance
An electric guitar with greater rigidity and weight, such as a solid body, will sustain longer than one with less rigidity, such as a hollow body.
Checking out the bridge
The bridge maintains intonation and action of string height. Adjusting the truss rod or changing string gauge can change intonation or action.
The Truss rod
An adjustable truss rod can correct any changes in neck curvature.
These are the basic and most important factors to be considered. But, there are various other factors to be considered while shopping for an electric version. And while buying one should remember that a good guitar is for a lifetime.
